How To Become A Paragliding Pilot

If you dream of flying through the air, there are some necessary steps to take. The Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors was a great resource for us as we were uncovering the qualifications to get in the air.

There are many different pilot qualifications and certifications you can get, but here is a rundown of a few of them:

The first degree in the APPI Education System is becoming an APPI 1 Discover Pilot. You will learn all the basics such as how to prepare, inflate, and control the wing on the ground as well as have your first solo flight. The downside, is you will still need an instructor’s supervision at this level.

If you want to become an independent pilot, you need to skip the second level and become an APPI 3 Pilot. At this level you are able to analyze weather conditions and make appropriate decisions which is crucial in keeping you safe while flying.

There are also many pilot certifications you can get. Here are a few of them:

Thermalling

The thermalling certification means that the pilot has navigated mountainous areas, involving flight in thermal conditions.

Winch

The winch system is a system used for take off. In order to get this certification you need to be taught the proper skills.

Performance

Once you have acquired advanced knowledge and skills that allow you to perform cross country flights safely, you can get the “Performance Certification”. This is issued by an APPI XC instructor.
