This is how you take your scrap rope and make it into a dog leash!
Some people actually use a flat braid or apply only rope which is easy to splice. It's hollow on the inside, but if you've got some odds and ends (like we can't really do anything with rope less than eight feet), what you can do if it's a double braid rope meaning a braid over another braid, is to make an easy dog leash. You can just pull this core out and this is an odd hank. It's about eight feet so we're going to pull the core all the way out and then I just garbage this.
Then what you're going to do is (this is about a 5/8 inch) tape the ends. Cut it at an angle and then you're going to take your chain and we just tape it. You kind of want to roll it in at an angle so it gets a sharp point right here so say this is going to be the handle end of my dog leash. If that's the case, I am going to figure out where I want my hand to go and determine the size I want the loop to be. Usually for 5/8" rope I like to use a 7/16" diameter fin.
You are going to put it in and then you feed it right down through the hollow the center of the rope where your core was and you may go in about 4 or 5 inches and then you're going to pull it out through the other end (again, this is your handle).
Put some tape on it and pull it through. Now you can come out a little too far and you may have to cut that out if you want, but the main thing is just making sure you have enough room for your handle. Then you can cut that extra off and then I just milk the cover over what you just put in now until we saw this.
Now take the end that's taped and do the same pencil fit. Get your tape, wrap it around at an angle (try to get it so it's pretty pointy) and then I just pop this off (this is the snap end so you want it to go in probably about 4 to 5 inches.
Now stick your fed in (you can do precise measurements if you want) and pull it through the core the same way you did the handle.
You're going to put that in the end of the fed and tape it on to the fin. Making sure not to undo the tape job, pull it out now this time since your snap is there you want to pull it really tight.
Then I kind of milk it back over and pull that tight and cut off a bit.
If you have fishing line at home that works really well too. This is a wax thread and what I do is I just string the needle and I double it up so I've cut this one already so it's doubled I just do a little rolling here at the end.
Roll that over then make it tight. Next, come down through the center of the rope with the needle go up and pull that so it kind of catches and then you just go up and down the rope a couple times with a quick stitch.

When you're all done I just stick it up back through the center of the rope again and pull it tight and then I cut this off. If you have a little lighter or something you can melt that down or a lot of times I just take a a smaller fin and just shove it down in so then that'll secure it and then you're going to want to do the same type of stitching on the handle side now.
You can do this with all different diameters of rope like I said that's a 5/8" I did this one out of 3/8" rope and I don't have that fit here but you could use a 1/4" or 3/8 or a 5/16" and then again just make sure that you sew it.
This is GREAT for little training leashes or smaller dogs!
