Safety Checklist for Kayaking & Canoeing

Canoeing and Kayaking are generally some of the more safe ways to enjoy water, but it’s always good to prepare for the worst. Here’s what we think you should pack with you in case disaster strikes:

  • Life Jacket
  • Throwable Flotation Device (for canoeing)
  • Bilge Pump
  • Large Sponge
  • Tow Line
  • Throw Rope (that floats)
  • Rope Bag (for canoeing)
  • Dry Bag (with extra water, food, sunscreen, clothing layers, etc.)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Paddle Float (for kayaking)
  • Emergency flares or strobe
  • Weather/VHF radio (+ local emergency channel list)
  • Compass (that floats)
  • Maps and charts in waterproof case
  • Knife
  • Whistle
  • Spare paddle
  • Repair Kit
  • Waterproof watch
