HMPE, Dyneema & Spectra Rope
HMPE stands for High Modulus Polyethylene. Most people know HMPE by such names as Spectra or Dyneema Fibers. HMPE fibers have a low melting point, however are some what resistant to water, moisture, most chemicals, and UV radiation. Kinking or compression of ropes manufactured with these fibers damages them easily. Rope manufactured using HMPE are safer to use than wire, have high strength, are light weight and are cost effecient. Studies done have shown that in applications where HMPE ropes have replaced wire, HMPE ropes are safer than wire, have reduced maintenance, and are more environmentally friendly.
HMPE was instroduced as Spectra in 1975 and Dyneema in 1979.
